I wrote this email yesterday so it’s one day out of date, but that doesn’t actually matter at all, I just felt like I should mention it:
Hello!
Happy October.
Today is a big day for me because it’s my ninth wedding anniversary, and it’s also Chinese National Day, which means that, due to my life choices, I have a day off work. I’m writing from the sky, on a plane ride to Sevilla, and I thought it might be a good time to tell you about the third and forthcoming session of Zine Writing Club which will commence later this month.
What should I say about this? I’m very excited.
Zine Writing Club is a six week writing course that will happen online every Sunday starting October 20th, until just before thanksgiving, and it’s for anybody who feels like reading, learning about, talking about, and writing creative non-fiction, in an extremely low-stakes kind of fashion. Every week we focus on a different style or possibility for writing. I send you a PDF of relevant reading material. We meet up and talk about it as a group. And then I give you a fun writing assignment to work on for the next week.
Everyone is invited to upload their writing to a shared Drive folder, and you can read and comment on each other’s work, which is fun, and seems to really encourage people to write. But you also don’t have to do that if you don’t want to. There’s no pressure to share your writing before you feel ready.
This is the third time I’m doing a session of Zine Writing Club this year, and that’s because it has felt really fun and successful, in terms of... All these cool, smart people seem to appear out of nowhere, they have interesting ideas to contribute to the conversation, we all laugh a lot and have fun, and then they start writing these really exciting pieces of literature, and I’m like, wow okay... This is a great way to spend Sundays!
If you’ve been part of one of these previous groups, you can totally join again because everything is new. If you’ve been thinking about it, but you felt shy, don’t worry about it, you’re so welcome! If this is your first time hearing about it, then perhaps this is your lucky day.
Here are the topics for the next sesh:
There is a lot more information about all of this on the website. The meetings are from 11am-1pm EST, and we’ve previously had people joining all the way from Los Angeles to Chicago to Lisbon to Taipei, so hopefully this works with your timezone. If you miss a meeting, no worries. I upload the recordings to the Drive and you can catch up in your own time.
We’re going to read writers like Kathy Acker, Dennis Cooper, Truman Capote, May-Lan Tan, Ron Padgett, Mattilda Bernstein Sycamore & many more. It’s going to be fun!
If you have any questions, just respond to this email. The deadline to sign up is October 14th.
I’m really looking forward to getting started!!
Do I have other information to share with you??? I feel like I should be telling you about something else...
Oh yes, I’m feeling happy because I have confirmed Shabby Doll House events with venues in Berlin (Nov 16) and Paris (Nov 21) and London (Nov 29) for next month. I’ll give you more details on these readings/parties once I’ve confirmed all the readers and come up with a ridiculous aesthetic for the posters.
Oh we’re beginning our descent, I have to put my laptop away!!
Had you forgotten I was on a plane? I almost had.
Also, another super encouraging and exciting thing is that our books are now available in a lot more bookstores than ever before. Kristen recently took a trip to Austin, Texas and spotted four Shabby Doll House titles at Alienated Majesty!

Okay, you can click here to find out more about Zine Writing Club!
I hope this email kills us both, as Carmen Brady recently tweeted, capturing the zeitgeist.
Just kidding, I hope you live a long and happy life!
Have a nice day,
<3 Lucy
